Mammoth Baby Found

Well, I decided I was going to stick with animals for the rest of the project. I love animals, so I’ll write more about them. I had a national geographic magazine, and it talked about mostly about animals. Apes, gorillas, etc. were mentioned.

The most interesting thing I found while reading this magazine was a mammoth baby. They had found a little mammoth baby millions of years old. The baby was whole, except for most of its hair, its toenails, its left ear, and part of its tail.

Scientists cut open the young (yet old) beast. They discovered that the mammoth’s lungs were filled with sticky tar. The all agreed the young beast died by getting stuck in a tar pit, which most present-day elephants almost never get out of. The tar makes you sink quickly. It’s like quicksand, only stickier.

They think most likely the mother watched the baby die, and once the herd left the area she whined and cried for her precious baby, but then finally gave up and followed the herd.
The scientists were also thinking of cloning the animal, because the DNA in the hair would help with that. They haven’t done it yet, but I think they should, because it would be really awesome to see a real live mammoth. And they could put the baby with an elephant mother, until its old enough to grow up by itself. One day, we would be able to see the kind of creatures that roamed the Indian’s world.

  1. Wow, this is a fascinating story. I don't know how I feel about cloning the mammoth (I keep thinking about how that backfired in Jurassic Park). :) Thanks for sharing this. (Be sure to put an extra space in between paragraphs before you post.)
